London Underground is one of the world’s most famous metro systems and is responsible for more than 3.5 million passenger journeys a day. It has 11 lines covering 402km and serving 270 stations. During peak hours, more than 500 trains are in operation. 

We have a great opportunity for a Carpenter/Joiner to manufacture and install timber finished goods of the right quality, quantity and by the client's required delivery dates.
 
Key Accountabilities:
Make, modify or repair timber components.
Install manufactured timber items on site as required.
Use and/or operate a range of hand, power and machine tools within one trade or discipline, e.g. Hand and power saws, drills, planers, routers.
Drive Workshops vehicles to and from outlying work sites as may be required.
Assist other staff in the production for work as required.
Complete all paperwork and reports as required.
Ensure that the work area and all plant and equipment are maintained in a clean, tidy and safe condition.
Lay out for drilling and cutting.
Identify different types of materials used, specify their uses and limitations.
Machine woods and other materials using appropriate wood mill machinery.
Assemble wooden/other materials components both in the shop and on site using appropriate fixing method to specification.
To manufacture woodworking joints to specification.
Safety Accountabilities:
Ensure that all activities and changes to equipment or process comply with all relevant safety and legal requirements.
Ensure that the planning of testing and trial activities includes the identification of appropriate risks and standards.
Skills, Knowledge & Experience
 
All of the below are essential unless stated desirable
Must have completed City & Guild in joiner and carpentry or equivalent qualification or relevant experience.
The ability to carryout workshop calculations.
Ability to understand and specify fixing e.g. glues to meet specification in terms of safety and quality.
The ability to re-sharpen tools.
The ability to varnish, paint or shellac finished components to specification.
The ability to safely mix and apply process solutions.
The ability to use overhead cranes and mechanical handling equipment.
The ability to operate mobile plant safely e.g. for lighting and power tools.
The ability to work safely at heights.
The ability to safely erect site lighting.
The ability to familiarise other employees in job or product requirements.
The ability to carryout general housekeeping without direction.
Through knowledge and understanding of rules and regulations relating to the job and ability to execute them.
Must hold a full clean UK Driving Licence
Must have the Ability to pass Protecting Workers on the Track – Engineering Hours (PWT-EH)
The ability to comprehend LUL practices on smoking, alcohol, drugs and attendance to duty and must comply with them.
The ability to communicate effectively with managers, other members of staff and customers.
Been passed as physically fit and reaching London Underground  medical standards of fitness as appropriate to the job.
