This is an exciting opportunity to join the team who run the largest museum service in the southwest of England. We’re looking for a competent, experienced and inspiring leader to manage a team of operational staff working front and back of house. In addition to staff, you will manage a portfolio of five Bristol museums containing unique collections and be responsible for all site operations, security and safety to ensure a warm welcome to over 1 million visitors each year.

This key role within Culture and Creative Industries team spans all the operational aspects across five Bristol museums and provides support to other areas of the department.
Managing over 50 staff across multiple sites, your team is the public face of Bristol Museums, which welcomes over 1 million visitors per year.

Red Lodge Museum
The Georgian House Museum
You will also support other parts of the department – such as the Bottleyard Studios.
Leading a large front of house team, you will support their development and inspire them to provide excellent customer service – and ensure they are appropriately trained.
You will have responsibility for a budget of over £1million per year and will support other teams in meeting their income targets – and you’ll be good at providing innovative solutions to drive improvements and save costs.
You will take a lead in ensuring that our premises are fit for purpose and will oversee improvements in the maintenance, security, cleanliness and efficiency of how our buildings operate.
You will manage and lead on buildings related projects where they interface with the Bristol Museums and Culture service, liaising between contractors and relevant colleagues across the council and the city.
Bristol Museums has a strong national profile and you will contribute to the national conversations around the future sustainability of museums and heritage assets with other National Portfolio Organisations and the Arts Council of England.
You will demonstrate a good working knowledge of the challenges of managing a complex portfolio of heritage buildings and museum collections including their security and the safety of all visitors and staff across all museum sites.
You’ll take an active interest in all aspects of Health and Safety for staff, contractors and visitors to ensure their safety and compliance and lead the H&S working group for the department. You’ll also be involved in emergency and contingency planning, training and development of staff.
The role is extremely varied and provides a fantastic opportunity to develop knowledge, skills and expertise in many areas, in unique heritage buildings, museum collections and work with a great team.
