Purpose of the role
Working for London Underground, for Power & Electrical you will be responsible for the safe and efficient repair and refurbishment of AP Power’s assets to maintain a safe and reliable power supply to London Underground. This includes all work associated with the Operations and Maintenance of the London Underground Power Distribution Network.
You will be responsible for the delivery of effective reliability by way of the implementation of appropriate plans for corrective and reactive maintenance; alongside the inspection, condition monitoring and testing regimes to ensure asset health in accordance with LUL Standards.
You will strive to implement reliability improvements, and ensure staff and contractors apply engineering best practice.
The role carries responsibility for the delivery of effective work on LUs Power Network and delivery for work on all substation plant in accordance with LUL Standards.
Apply LU standards, policies, rules and procedures as related to AP Power HV and LV systems to ensure compliance and conformity with policy and rules.
Apply and monitor management systems within the Plant Operations Section to fulfil this purpose including H&S and I/R matters.
Responsibility for the effective direction and management of Plant Operations staff and contractors
Direct, control and monitoring of staff working on behalf of the Plant Operations which includes a team of Engineers, Industrial Staff and external contractors which undertake all required activities.
Monitor, track and observe performance objectives for the Plant Operations section.
Identify & develop technical innovations in line with industry best practice and other benchmarks to improve the safety, reliability and efficiency of Plant assets which serve the London Underground Power Distribution Network.
Represent the interests of the Plant Section. Interface as necessary with suppliers, manufacturers, service providers and LU stakeholders on matters relating to Plant operations, maintenance and reliability. Provide accounts at forums, committees and agencies accordingly in support of AP Power’s wider interests.
Meet the prescribed asset reliability targets and key performance indicators set by the Plant Manager.
Apply reliability improvements and influence renewals, upgrades, replacements and designs.
The role requires command and understanding of substation Plant and equipment as well as repair and condition monitoring techniques.
Deliver safe systems of work in accordance with Power Distribution HV/LV rules.
Report writing and review; supporting processes such as failure reports, technical reports, work instructions, project scopes, method statements, risk assessments, staff competencies, PGIs, on site staff engagement, etc.

Degree Electrical Engineering (equivalent experience). Other suitable qualifications will be considered if accompanied by specific experience within a power distribution network. (Essential)
Through understanding of Health & Safety, LU policies and legislation relating to both an electrical and railway environment. (Essential)
Understanding of asset management techniques and performance monitoring.(Essential)
Hold LV1 – safety critical license, including manual control and switching duties (Essential)
Detailed knowledge and understanding of substation Plant and equipment as well as typical failure modes and repair techniques (Essential)
Application of engineering best practice. The role is required to monitor asset performance through daily vigilance of plant performance, the application of best practise to maximise reliability and the resolution of failures to secure plant availability. (Essential)
Mentoring and coaching knowledge to enable effective management of staff. (Essential)
Hold HV1 including manual control and switching duties. (Desirable)
Hold LV1 – safety critical license, including manual control and switching duties (Desirable)
Hold AP Power Distribution and LU licenses and permits for the execution of duties, including NVQ Assessor Role to A1 Certification, specifically HV1. (Desirable)
Experience of operating and maintaining an electrical distribution network. (Essential)
Experience of managing procurement channels, finance department, contractors, manufacturers and suppliers. (Essential)
Experience of managing safe systems of work, rules and licencing to satisfy LU policy and legislation. (Essential)
Experience of materials management, provision of spares and consumables. (Essential)
Experience of managing and controlling strategic and line side spares, identifying and retaining salvaged stock as well as newly sourced provisions. (Essential)
Experience of managing and directing team of Engineers and skilled craft staff. (Essential)
Experience of the installation, commissioning, operations, maintenance and repair of all aspects of HV, LV & DC substation switchgear and plant. (Essential)
Experience of hands on site leadership - Leading a team to deliver to tight and dynamic operational deadlines; preferably within the electricity or railway network. (Essential)
Experience of devising and delivering safe systems of work through the preparation of documentation – Method statements, risk assessments to progress work in a safe manner with minimal impact to the electrical network or operational railway. (Essential)
