There’s more to it than Tubes, roads, buildings and bridges. This is about connecting communities and creating opportunities, so we’re ready for the 21st century and beyond.

Day-to-day, your focus will be on motivating and developing your department to deliver safe, cost effective engineering solutions across the organisation. But it doesn’t stop there; you will also apply your own extensive technical expertise across a wide range of complex issues on the transport network, as well as developing technical strategy and acting as the designated technical authority where assigned.

As the Principal Engineering Leader for Tunnels, you will be acting as the technical leader for this discipline and will report into the Head of Profession for Civil Engineering & Built Environment. Your key accountabilities will include:

Providing Tunnel engineering input in support of TfL operations, strategy, projects and asset management. This may include both discipline specific engineering, construction engineering and project engineering input
Safeguarding the safety, integrity and efficiency of the Tunnel assets at all stages in the asset life cycle through engagement in planning, design, construction, operation, maintenance and assessment activities including work related to the effects of inclement weather and climate change
Managing and continuing the development of the existing team of Tunnelling experts
Working closely with industry leading internal and external stakeholders that shall include the London Mayor’s office, Network Rail and the ORR
Forecasting and maintaining a forward-looking resource plan for the Tunnels Capability
Maintaining and updating risk assessments for Surface and LU Tunnel assets on the relevant TfL risk assessment tools / platforms.
You will be a chartered engineer and ideally either a Fellow or a Member working towards Fellowship of the Institution of Civil Engineers or another relevant internationally recognised institution.

You will have an expert knowledge, skills and experience of:

Legislation, technical standards and industry best practice related to tunnels and tunnelling in the Railways or a similarly complex environment
Health, safety and environmental considerations applicable to tunnels and tunnelling
Design, construction, operation, maintenance and assessment of tunnels.
This position requires you to be able to work in a matrix framework. You need to demonstrate and build on your credibility, competence and technical excellence in the development, approval and implementation of robust solutions through collaborative working, trust and proactive management of your direct team and customers’ expectations.

The more teams and projects you’ve led, the better. It’s also equally important you bring a passion for the TfL Vision and strategy too. That’s because, wherever you join us, you’ll explore work of unparalleled scale, scope and variety across a unique range of projects, as you build your career and expertise. So come and bring on tomorrow, as a Principal Engineering Leader at TfL.
