We are currently recruiting a Waste Systems and Improvement Manager to join the Vehicle Logistics team to have overall accountability for the provision of waste collection services for London Underground and associated customers.
This is an exciting opportunity for an engaged, motivated, self-driven individual with strong leadership skills to plan, implement and deliver the strategic business improvement necessary to ensure a cost effective and legally compliant service which meets customer requirements.
You will also be responsible for overseeing compliance with environmental legislation, scrap management and local management systems.
Working with the Vehicle Logistics Strategy Manager you will plan, implement and deliver strategic business improvements across the full range of departmental transport activity.
Developing, implementing and monitoring a strategic plan for all aspects of Vehicle Logistics Waste operations that delivers legal compliance, continuous service improvement, takes account of corporate targets and objectives and which meets customer expectations and budgetary constraints, (cost, quality and time).
Provision of direct labour and management of subcontracted services for LU and associated customers to ensure timely and efficient waste collection services are delivered
Work with the vehicle Logistics and Strategy manager to ensure improvements and efficiencies achieved in waste operations are leveraged across the vehicle logistics department.
Work with commercial and procurement to ensure suitable and sufficient framework agreements are in place for all subcontracted services, which are effectively managed and comply with corporate governance .
Implementing, delivering and monitoring robust key performance indicators; metrics reporting and management information data for all waste and internal management systems to support internal and external customers.
Developing and effectively managing local business improvement and audit programmes, ensuring a focus on continuous improvement in department systems, health and safety, quality; and environment.
Overseeing all aspects of local safety management including IRF management, accident investigations and related processes to drive down accidents and incidents within Vehicle Logistics.
Maintaining and developing good business relations with customers and suppliers to identify future business opportunities; cost savings and business growth.
Managing of staff including, including but not limited to, absence management, investigations, disciplinary, performance and development.
Accountable for Waste profit and loss, Scrap management revenue returns and tracking and controlling expenditure in strict accordance with budget.
To ensure collaborative working, knowledge sharing; clear direction; performance measurement and good communication with the following to ensure the delivery of a legally compliant and cost effective waste management service and effective local management systems:
Vehicle Logistics and Strategy Manager.
All Vehicle Logistics team members.
London Underground Ambience and Commercial Managers (budget holders).
London Underground Area Managers, customer service managers and other customers (GLA/TfL).
3rd Party Waste Contractors /Suppliers.
LU HSE Managers/ Environment Agency and other interested external parties.
Skills, Knowledge & Experience:
All essential unless stated otherwise.
Ability to use a wide range of IT packages. Excellent IT, investigative and report preparation skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to utilize these skills to persuade and influence others around changes and delivery of strategy.
Ability to interpret and use different sources of information to develop improvement opportunities and strategies, track performance and communicate information to managers, stakeholders and other interested parties.
Ability to manage staff with a key focus on motivating and developing own team members.
Ability to manage a portfolio of different activities to ensure they deliver to time and quality.
Ability to deliver strong contract management skills, including negotiating, managing expectations and relationship building
Ability to manage a budget and deliver costs savings/improvements.
Highly self-motivated with ability to evaluate risks and establish effective contingency plans
Educated to NEBOSH Certificate in Environmental Management level of equivalent,
An excellent understanding of waste management legislation, policy and strategies.
An understanding of Health, Safety, Environment and Quality management systems and practices.
A strong understanding of the strategic waste management agenda in Greater London Authority, TFL, London and the UK
Strong commercial awareness and business acumen, with the ability to apply strategic thinking to areas of control
Strong knowledge of information systems, performance management and continuous improvement methodologies
Proven knowledge around provision of excellent customer service and delivering a positive customer experience
Experience of leading operational teams, ideally within the transport / waste industry and delivering business improvement.
Have extensive experience of working in the Waste Management industry and have strong awareness of all required legislation and environmental standards.
Experience of implementing and maintaining management system(s) and auditing protocols
Some operational working knowledge of the LU network
The job holder should have a safety and environmental related qualification or at least sound knowledge of Health and Safety systems and practices. High level of corporate awareness, business acumen and professional integrity.
Experience of managing budgets and commercial acumen within a waste management environment.
